How They Get There Analysis

How They Get There

How they get there is a short film of hybrid genres. The genres include, romance, comedy and tragedy.
The short film could be considered to be romantic in genre due to their being a male and female character. The male character obviously admires the female character and he follows her down the road continuing to flirt with her. This sets the beginning genre of the short film.
The film then turns around into a comedy genre as the characters copy each other’s gestures and movements. It begins with the female character copying what the male character is doing. The female character disappears behind the bin for a few seconds when walking down the road, and then appears again with a different movement. This time the male character then begins to copy the female character.
This is when the tragedy genre begins. The male character misinterprets what the female character is gesturing. The female character is gesturing the male character to stop as he is too close to the curb and a car is fast approaching. This turns into a tragedy when he copies the woman and it results in him being hit by a car. The tragic elements of this short film show how bad impact was on the male character. The car window screen is smashed and they impact result in the car flipping in the air. The woman’s emotions show how she feels. She is horrified and may feel guilty for the male character as she was the one who began to copy in the first place.

Blog Task 7

Vladimir Propp’s Theory

Vladimir Propp developed a character theory for studying media texts, which indicates that there are 7 broad character types

Hero- Leads the narrative, is usually looking for something or trying to solve something.

Villain- Conflicts with the hero.

Heroine- is usually some sort of prize or reward for the hero.

Father-An authoritative figure that offers a reward to the hero for completing their quest.

Helper- Helps the hero (often as a sidekick)

Donor- Gives the hero something- a clue or a special power (helps them to complete their quest)

Mentor- Teaches and guides the hero.

Todorov’s Theory

Todorov suggests that all narratives follow a five-part structure. This is:

A state of equilibrium, where everything is balanced.

A disruption of that order by an event

A recognition that the disorder has occurred

An attempt to repair damage of disruption and to restore order.

A return or restoration of a new equilibrium.

Film Review's -The Notebook

IMDB User Review

10 February 2005 | by filmnoir500 (London) ★★★★
I went to see this film with my sister and my Mum and we were the only ones in the cinema. Not the best start, but I continued to watch it anyway and am so glad I did. This is probably one of the most beautiful and romantic films I have ever seen! From the relationship of the two characters to their surroundings, every scene is breathtaking! The Notebook tells the story of a summer romance that turns into a romance never to be forgotten. Allie and Noah are the two lead characters and they are wonderful. You immediately fall in love with the characters and you want to follow every step of their doomed love story. it is one of the greatest love stories ever told. Look out for the lake scene, unbelievable! I came out of the cinema wanting to go back in again and watch it all over again. It feels like you are reading a diary watching this film, that's how detailed and wonderful this film is. Cannot really give too much away about the story, all I can say is if you haven't seen this film yet, be sure to see it. I cannot think of a film more perfect for Valentines Day!
This review is from a member of the public posted on IMDB. The review is very positive and gives a brief synopsis of the film. Also the reviewer recommends the film for valentines day which relates to the romantic genre.
ROTTEN TOMATOES REVIEWS

The adaptation of Nicholas Sparks' novel is possibly the best interpretation of all. Gosling and McAdams really make the film better than anyone expected. The visualisation from Nick Cassavetes places this film atop one of the most memorable, cult-like, romance films of all time. 4.5/5

Heartwarming romantic movie that gives your insides go mushy with emotions. This is the bestest love story I have ever seen! The result is a beautifully produced version of Nicholas Sparks's book.
The movie gallops in speed as we are absorbed into the great plot and brilliant acting of all the cast involved.

This review is from a member of the public posted on Rotten Tomatoes. This is another short review, but it is packed with information. EMPIRE REVIEW

★★★★Review
Following the tradition of Fried Green Tomatoes, this romantic weepy relates a tale in the hope that its modern-day protagonists รน who may well have played a part in the story themselves - will be better for hearing it.

But, on film at least, this story might have been better without its modern-day protagonists, played by James Garner and Gena Rowlands (Cassavetes' mother). Garner's narration smacks of greeting-card sentiment and the Alzheimer's storyline, in which Rowlands' character has lost her memory, is oversimplified.

Thank goodness, then, for the magic created by young stars Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams, whose intense romance is played out with conviction and an infectious joie de vivre. Little in their journey is unexpected: you're waiting for the obstacle (after all, what self-respecting young lady in the 1940s would have been seen without two handsome suitors to compete over her?), and the solution is not hard to spot, either.

But thanks to delightful characters, careful pacing and a stirring score, this film achieves the distinction of being exceptionally moving without anyone major having to die.

This review is from a member of the public posted on Empire. The review is longer than the others and it gives a brief overview of the plot giving it a good review. This reviewer comments on the cast and states how they think it could have been better without the modern-day protagonists. The reviewer gives the film an overall distinction for it being exceptionally moving.

MY REVIEW

★★★★★

This film is the most loving and emotional film i have ever seen. From the start is automatically attracts you to watch it all and even watch it again when its finished! Nick Cassavetes delivers a romantic melodrama which is set in the 40's with the great actors Gosling (From The Believer) and Adams (From Mean Girls) who cook up an unlikely degree of sexual chemistry, but it all ends in heartache. The film has been produced in a clever way which makes it easy to understand the plot, but you do not expect the ending! The film will make you laugh, cringe and even cry and it will leave romantics blubbing and full of love.
