How They Get There Analysis

How They Get There

How they get there is a short film of hybrid genres. The genres include, romance, comedy and tragedy.
The short film could be considered to be romantic in genre due to their being a male and female character. The male character obviously admires the female character and he follows her down the road continuing to flirt with her. This sets the beginning genre of the short film.
The film then turns around into a comedy genre as the characters copy each other’s gestures and movements. It begins with the female character copying what the male character is doing. The female character disappears behind the bin for a few seconds when walking down the road, and then appears again with a different movement. This time the male character then begins to copy the female character.
This is when the tragedy genre begins. The male character misinterprets what the female character is gesturing. The female character is gesturing the male character to stop as he is too close to the curb and a car is fast approaching. This turns into a tragedy when he copies the woman and it results in him being hit by a car. The tragic elements of this short film show how bad impact was on the male character. The car window screen is smashed and they impact result in the car flipping in the air. The woman’s emotions show how she feels. She is horrified and may feel guilty for the male character as she was the one who began to copy in the first place.

Blog Task 7

Vladimir Propp’s Theory

Vladimir Propp developed a character theory for studying media texts, which indicates that there are 7 broad character types

Hero- Leads the narrative, is usually looking for something or trying to solve something.

Villain- Conflicts with the hero.

Heroine- is usually some sort of prize or reward for the hero.

Father-An authoritative figure that offers a reward to the hero for completing their quest.

Helper- Helps the hero (often as a sidekick)

Donor- Gives the hero something- a clue or a special power (helps them to complete their quest)

Mentor- Teaches and guides the hero.

Todorov’s Theory

Todorov suggests that all narratives follow a five-part structure. This is:

A state of equilibrium, where everything is balanced.

A disruption of that order by an event

A recognition that the disorder has occurred

An attempt to repair damage of disruption and to restore order.

A return or restoration of a new equilibrium.
